Over time, natural skin aging and exposure to UV radiation from the sun make superficial blood vessels visible and cause the skin to produce pockets of irregular pigmentation.
An intense pulsed light treatment is a non-invasive solution to skin aging by delivering a series of gentle light pulses to the skin. This process of restoring a youthful appearance is called photorejuventation. This procedure gives enhanced results when alternated with a microdermabrasion. (See section under facial peels and microdermabrasion.)
Common conditions treated with intense pulsed light are:
- Facial telangiectasias
- Flushing and redness
- Poikiloderma (red neck)
- Redness following laser skin resurfacing
- Age spots and liver spots
- Pigmented lesions
- Scar coloration and general skin elasticity
Frequently Asked Questions
Intense Pulse Light- Vascular & pigmented lesions
How does it work?
The intense pulsed light emits wavelengths that are absorbed by vascular and pigmented lesions in multiple levels of the skin. When the broad band light is absorbed by melanin (brown spots) and hemoglobin (veins/red spots), the lesions are gently heated and destroyed.
What areas can be treated?
The Prolite II skin rejuvenation procedure can be performed on the face, neck, upper chest, & hands.
How long does the procedure take?
It depends on the area being treated. It typically takes 25-30 minutes to treat the entire face. Make up may be applied following treatment.
Is it painful?
You will experience a slight sensation as the pulses of therapeutic light are passed over your skin. The sensation is very mild and easily tolerated. Topical creams can be used for individuals who wish to numb the skin.
How many treatments are required?
A series of four treatments are required for best results.. Each treatment takes less than one hour to perform. Treatments are scheduled once a month.
What results can I expect?
Visible signs of aging and sun damage will be significantly reduced. There is an overall improvement in skin texture and tone.
Are there any side effects?
The vascular and pigmented lesions will be darker in appearance for 5-7 days.
